The More I Learn about Japanese Culture, the More I Realize I Will Never Understand it...

I just spent all day educating myself on Japanese culture. In a big way. And I've learned a ton of interesting, fascinating tidbits that I'll write about later. It's all left me so confused that I need some time think about it.

But I just read this article, which I thought was pretty interesting. It discusses the differences between American and Japanese blogging styles. "While Americans blog to stand out, the Japanese do it to fit in, blogging about small stuff: cats and flowers, bicycles and breakfast, gadgets and TV stars."

For example, the author interviews a woman who writes an anonymous blog called "I had my lunch" and every day she diligently blogs in detail about what she ate during her lunch break. What I found so telling about Japanese culture is that even though her blog is completely anonymous, she never includes any negative comments about the food or restaurant service because "There is a part of me that feels sorry for the restaurant, if it were to lose business because of what I write. I don't want to influence the diners."

Wow.

Why does she blog, I wonder? If it's not about leaving a lasting impression on the World or providing useful information, then what's the point?

Really great article link!

I don't get it either, it must be therapeutic for them on some level, or maybe not. Maybe it really is just something for them to do when they're bored on a train.

We may never know :-(

It's so strange...I think that about Mixi too, (you know that Japanese version of facebook?) It's supposed to be a social networking site but no one uses their real names or photos.
